[Rolling Stone Magz] Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Concert Scores 5 Emmy Noms

'Glee' earns 19 nominations as music shows dominate 2010 field

 

The 25th Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Concert — an HBO special of the epic two-night extravaganza at New York's Madison Square Garden last October that featured U2, Bruce Springsteen and more — earned five Emmy nominations this morning, including Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special, plus nods for directing, editing, sound mixing and technical direction.
Music shows dominated in a host of categories, starting with Glee, which picked up a massive 19 nods including Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series (Matthew Morrison), Outstanding Lead Actress (Lea Michele), Supporting Actor (Chris Colfer), Supporting Actress (Jane Lynch), and Guest Actor and Actress (Mike O'Malley, Neil Patrick Harris and Kristen Chenoweth). The show is also up for Outstanding Comedy Series and a major writing category.

Andy Samberg's Lonely Island got a nomination for "Shy Ronnie," the hilarious rap about an awkward child MC, which was performed by Rihanna on Saturday Night Live, in the Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics category. That song will face off against Steve Earle's theme for HBO's Treme, titled "This City." Patti Smith: Dream of Life scored a nod for Exceptional Merit in Nonfiction Filmmaking. And as usual, American Idol is up for six trophies including Outstanding Reality Competition Program.
The Who's Super Bowl halftime show is up for Outstanding Art Direction for Variety, Music or Nonfiction Programming, and In Performance at the White House: A Celebration of Music From the Civil Rights Movement will compete for a directing award.
Conan O'Brien's brief Tonight Show run earned a nod for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series, prompting the soon-to-be TBS host to ironically tweet, "Congrats to my staff on 4 Emmy nominations. This bodes well for the future of The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien."
The 2010 Emmys will be hosted by Late Night host Jimmy Fallon and air live from Los Angeles on August 29th.
